IndexU ADODB issues

Some users may experience an issue when they or their host upgrades to the newest version(s) of PHP5.

The error should be obvious and state that there are issues in some files located in the ADODB folder.

The fix is quite simple

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone. Have a great holiday season and a happy new year.

Why can’t I mirror DMOZ?

So this is more of a rant than a tip, but believe it or not it comes up VERY often with users that are new to directory software like IndexU.

A user pays $99 for a copy of IndexU and another $65 for a copy of the Extreme DMOZ Extractor and since they CAN extract all of DMOZ they do.

Then they somehow manage to find a way to upload some of that data to their server and it dies, badly.

The complaints after that are “It’s IndexU’s fault because of this or that” and they blame it on various things.

The issue is not whether IndexU can handle the data, rather it’s can your server handle the data?

I don’t give a hoot if you have a dual Xeon with 4GB of ram and a 300GB hard drive. There is a LOT more to webhosting than just space.

These issues are things like disk performance, I/O, optimization and throughput. You cannot honestly expect a webserver (lets be honest, it’s almost the same as a PC) to run one million queries in less than a second so you can update your site quickly.

I don’t care what you think, it’s not possible because of the HARDWARE. Anyone who thinks they can run a mirror of DMOZ just because they have a hosting account or a dedicated server is just fooling themselves and proves that they know absolutely nothing about what they are doing.

Add to the fact that DMOZ already exists, and most major search engines use the DMOZ data anyways. You would be doing nothing more than getting yourself banned from search engines for duplicate content while adding your nightmares to my support tickets and emails.

Forget mirroring DMOZ, and make something unique.

Another sneak peek

I’ve made another sneak peek available for users that are interested in viewing the IndexU Modification guide.

I would really like feedback on what you think of this page. Yes it is incomplete, no it’s not pretty. It’s the functionality that I want to get opinions on.

Under the Database Breakdown section you will see what appear to be a number of links at the top. Please move your mouse over them and tell me

  • what you think of using that idea
  • Do you have any issues viewing those windows? (if so tell me your OS and browser)
  • Do you feel the information that is there is complete?

I need as much feedback as I can get. This manual is for you, the users. And without your input I can’t make it better.

Another Extreme DMOZ Extractor issue

This tip can apply to IndexU as well!

I recently sold a slice to a customer, and they were experiencing issues after that with the Top 10 not being updated. Looking further into the issue the hits were not being updated either. Additionally the Hot links were not being updated.

If you know anything about IndexU then you should know that all three of these things are related.

Top 10 gets it’s data from hits, and Hot get it’s data from hits as well. So if the hits are not being updated then none of those items will work.

It seems that with some sites when you upload a slice via the admin panel that Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

Extreme DMOZ Extractor error

If you use the Extreme DMOZ Extractor and receive the following error

Run time error ‘429′
ActiveX component can’t create object

then you are missing a simple windows component that is free from Microsoft. Download the following from Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content. and install it and run the DMOZ Extractor again and it should work perfectly fine.

Competitors and user input

It’s always interesting to read what others have to say about other scripts and the benefits and issues of using those scripts.

While I was visiting a site today I saw something that one would not consider good. In fact it was scathingly bad.

Now I know IndexU has had it’s own issues in the past, but sit and think about the number of issues you’ve had first. Now go read this post at directory-owners.com.

I don’t know about the reality of what that user speaks of, but I can say that when a customer is at a point like that there is no return for them. They are now a lost customer and will do everything in their power to push people away from using a product.

It’s my job on the Nicecoder forums (and support) to

  1. assess the issue and determine the cause
  2. assist users with their questions and issues
  3. fix the issue at hand
  4. report the issue to Dody for a bug fix if necessary
  5. act as liason between the customer and programmer/owner(s)
  6. if out of scope then direct user to third party assistance
  7. perform all the above in a timely manner

It seems that the owners of the directory script in that post above have neglected to follow through with this simple business plan for their support personnel. This isn’t a list that Dody or John have provided me, it’s a list I made myself because it makes sense and it’s the right thing to do.

So in the end, by looking at the list, you can see that it’s my job to ensure that a customer doesn’t end up like the one above. I know I can’t make everyone happy, but at least they can end up walking away saying “they tried everything they could, it just wouldn’t work for me”.

Like a kid in a candy store

Right now I’m like a kid in a candy store. I just got news, big news.

Uber, stupendous, massive, enormous news. But I haven’t been given permission to give it away. I’m honestly twitching to tell you what I found out today and what it will mean for IndexU.

I have to get this cleared, so stay tuned for a major announcement!

Mac (yuk) issues with .htaccess

No, I don’t like Mac’s, but recently two seperate users had the same issue with a Mac OS “feature”.

This tip is brought to you by Brad at communityseo.com and is basically a copy of his post there. I don’t claim credit for the post, only credit for finding the post.

Files which have the prefix of “.” are treated as core system files, because that’s how they’re named in Mac. So by default, Finder hides all these files completely - you can’t find them unless you have some knowledge of the Terminal. So, if you want to be able to grab your. htaccess file, follow these steps:

Whatever you do, don’t reply to this post and try and convince me Mac’s are good.
