IndexU Support

Some time ago John asked me to write something about making money with directories. I decided to write what turned out to be a small book focused on directories with IndexU as the focus.

Of course something like this would apply to every directory site out there, regardless of what software you’re using.

I will release the book slowly on the Nicecoder forums in the new Marketing And Promotion forum. Perhaps one chapter every week or two.

I will mention that the book is still somewhat incomplete, mainly in the Google sections as I haven’t had time.

But by releasing it in chapters every week or two this should give me more than a month to finish it up. And if I have to, I’ll pass over the Google sections and post the rest of the book and get back to it later.

I hope you all find it useful and that it gives you some hints and insights as to how to improve your directory and even some things not to do (we all learn by mistakes!)

I’m going to go post a bonus chapter right now on the forum and once the book is complete it will be available here on the blog in PDF format for everyone to enjoy.

Things at Nicecoder have been heating up during the month of November. News of a new release has been given but no date has been set yet. A large number of fixes were released last month that take care of some issues that users were having and a discussion on the future of IndexU is still taking place on the forums.

I am happy to say that users are participating in the discussion and telling us the direction they would like to see IndexU to take. A number of the items discussed have already been implimented and a number of items are planned for the near future.

Automated Installer
Dody has recently written a script that will install your copy of IndexU for you right from the Nicecoder website! The installer is free to use and should work on any webserver. Feel free to check it out!

Tips

Recently on my blog I detailed how to impliment the IndexU spam filters. This is a great feature that not many IndexU users know much about. Using this tip you can filter out spam keywords and domains and they will get sent into your spam links area where they can be deleted at your leisure.

I’m happy to report that the IndexU Install Guide and the Extreme DMOZ Extractor Guide have both been added to the client area of Nicecoder. This will allow users to get the guides without having to search them.

A big thanks to Dody for adding the guides to the client area.

Recently a customer installed IndexU on their host and received an error after installation. The error was

Unexpected character in input: ‘\’ (ASCII=92) state=1 in
/lib/link.class.php on line 1209

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in
/lib/link.class.php on line 1209

Attached to this post is a new menu you can use for your IndexU admin panel. Place the file in /admin_tpl/ and replace menu.html with this version.

This menu creates two new categories in your admin menu

• My Addons
• Spam Links

Under My Addons are a few links to mods that I have releases as well as links to commonly used and released mods as well as a link to generate your sitemap.

Under Spam Links are the two menu items you need to use to control spam in your directory.

I’m sure many of you have seen the “Spam Links” link in the admin panel and wondered how to use it. Unfortunately this is a poorly implimented feature due to where the links needed appear in the admin panel.

I have tested this for the title, url and description fields and it catches the keywords in every field.

I’ve been hard at work making a new directory for IndexUSupport. It’s almost done and is very customized. I just need to add some links to one particular category and then add back the search feature which I removed because I wasn’t happy with where it was.

This directory will only be viewable to members of IndexUSupport, right now anyone can view it if they know the address, but that will shortly change!
