mod_rewrite not functioning?

Lately there have been a whole host of customers saying their mod_rewrite no longer works. Here, for the record, is how to ensure your mod_rewrite is functioning and enabled.

Please Login or Register to read the rest of this content.

That is the complete process. If something doesn’t work after that it’s because you missed a step.

Remember that mod_rewrite does not work on IIS based servers. Yes mod_rewrite will work on a Windows server with apache, but NOT with IIS. This is a limitation of IIS and has nothing to do with IndexU.

News and changes

There hasn’t been much activity lately, and that’s due to the pending arrival of the new release. I would rather not put a bunch of time into making mods or addons for 5.4 if they will be redundant in no time at all. Expect some more quiet time until we hear what’s going on with IndexU Deluxe.

Users have been able to see the Febuary newsletter from Nicecoder on the site here for a while now but have not received the newsletter in their inboxes. Apparently there is an issue with the listmail script Dody is using so the newsletter mailing has been delayed. Why do I have it on my site? I’m the one who is writing the newsletters.

Some of you have noticed that the LiveHelp logo was recently changed and I no longer “appear” online. The fact is that I am online, but I changed the how the script operates and you will only see me as being online if you are a paid subscriber. This was done to help advertise the paid subscriptions and to cut down on some resources.

Lastly, I plan on having a membership sale when the new version is released. It’s going to be a time delayed sale so I’ll explain how it will work now.

The sale depends on the time of the annoucement of the sale. Here is a table of how the sale will work.

Time after announcement Discount
0-60 minutes 50%
1-2 hours 40%
2-4 hours 30%
4-12 hours 20%
12-24 hours 10%

As you can see the discount gets lower the longer you wait. If you happen to try and pay for the membership and there is a problem, email me right away and I will guarantee your price once the issue has been resolved.

Another Manual!

Another day, another Manual for a nicecoder project.

This is a complete users guide for the Extreme DMOZ Extractor! This file details extracting links and categories from the DMOZ RDF files all the way to importing them into your IndexU directory.

I hope you enjoy this manual and you get some use out of it. It also describes how to fix the most common error that users come across!

Nicecoder Febuary Newsletter

Welcome to a new year and a new direction for Nicecoder. There have been a number of changes in the background that users have not seen and I have reluctantly been holding back on.

The new year brings us a new office with some new programmers! There are now a total of seven programmers for Nicecoder. The programmers will be working on all Nicecoder products including the Extreme DMOZ Extractor, iDesk and IndexU. While we can’t make any promises or announce any dates, we can expect good things to come out of this and should see some updates soon. The decision to move forward with a team of programmers was brought about by Dody and John who want to see Nicecoder take a giant step forward in a new direction. I for one am excited to see what will come of this.

December was a slow month for updates due to Dody opening the new office and hiring the programmers so no new fixes were released but January provided us with a number of fixes and news bits.

Mod Of The Month contest
Nicecoder is now offering a Mod Of The Month contest. You can find full and complete details at the link below
http://www.nicecoder.com/community/showthread.php?p=28455

The winner for the mod of the month for January is inspireme for his Targeted Article mod. You can view the mod at http://www.nicecoder.com/community/showthread.php?p=29017. Congrats to Matt and his $100 reward will be coming to him soon.

A new manual for the Extreme DMOZ Extractor
I have written a new manual for the Extreme DMOZ Extractor. The new manual shows exactly how to use the Extractor to get categories and links and how to upload them to your IndexU. The manual can be found in the client area and can also be found at http://www.nicecoder.com/community/showthread.php?t=5802

More good news about manuals
Many users have spoken about how much they like the IndexU Install Guide that I wrote a while back. I’m pleased to say that the Install Guide has been added to the client area so users no longer have to go searching for it.

More translations added
A few new translations have been added to the client area. These are the Greek, Swedish and Japanese translations. This brings the total number of translations up to thirteen! With an upcoming feature of the new IndexU being able to change character sets in the admin panel, this makes IndexU to a truly international program.

IndexU Deluxe
Dody has recently changed the version number in SVN to IndexU Deluxe and has stated that the new version should be available some time in Febuary. Changes include mail templates being stored in the database as well as a number of settings. This will reduce the amount of work requred when upgrading. New features and functions include SMTP mail sending, subscription payments for 2checkout and paypal, preventing duplicate URL submissions and a number of other fixes as well as a new look for the script and an enhanced admin area.

Recent Fixes
Paypal and 2checkout subscriptions have now been added to the SVN version of IndexU.

ICE theme

A slim and trim template designed for IndexU v5.40 to focus users on your listings.

The ICE template offers a “cool” change from most other templates in numerous areas.

1) It is designed to use header titles and description as the page title. This makes SEO on your part important but will greatly increase targeted traffic.
2) With most of the “fat” cut out you can focus on what really matters, the content.
3) A total width of 770px which looks good on modern monitors even at resolutions of 1280×1024
4) Complete changes in the way the login system is viewed. While still in a “block” it appears as part of the menu and gives a more integrated look.
5) With the addition of the colorful tags cloud mod by Zubby as seen on the Nicecoder forum the colours pop right out at the users and focus their attention.
6) The user control panel has also been updated with the theme to offer you a completely new look.
7) Built in Google Adsense block

Banned from google?

Over the last month I’ve had reports from two users about this error

PHP Warning: readfile (themes/cleandex/images/pr///www.google.com/terms_of_service.html)

They did not know what the error meant. Well it’s quite obvious that their site has been banned from accessing Google (by domain name from what I can tell). The error message may vary slightly due to what theme you’re using, but it still ends with www.google.com/terms_of_service.html

The users had set their Pagerank Cache at a very low number (they did not tell me what they used) and their site literally abused Google and they were banned.

Lets look at an example. If you had 5000 visitors a day and had the cache set to 0 and those visitors looked at 10 pages each that would mean you’d be making 50,000 requests a day to Google.

That’s nothing but a denial of service attack!

Leave this setting at a minimum of 30. If you have a large amount of traffic you might even want to increase that number to lower your number of requests over a period of time.

It’s a known fact that Page Rank does not update once a month, so a setting of 30 is already low. If you’re desperate to update your PR numbers you can always flush the PR table in the database and then change your settings to a realistic number like 30 or 45.

Wordpress & Updates

This is just a friendly reminder to those users out there that have wordpress integrated with IndexU.

If you haven’t done so, you should update your wordpress installation as a new version was released within the last 24 hours due to a security issue.

I realize that some users may not be aware of these kinds of issues, but you should really keep on top of them or you could discover that your site is hacked one day.

The newest version is 2.3.3. I knw it’s a bitch to upgrade scripts every time a release comes out. Today I updated 10 installations of WordPress so I can feel your pain.

If you need assistance post a message in the Nicecoder forum and I will help you as much as I can. For a small fee of $10 I can do the upgrade and reintegration for you.
